Response- I have actually had this same thought many times already during my college experience. I have come to the conclusion that the words "essay" and "term paper" have so much negative connotation for students, that just giving that assignment brings back bad memories for students of late nights, caffeine overloads, spell check, and bad grades. I feel that some students psyche themselves out from the beginning, and never actually have a chance to write a paper acceptable at the college level. On the other hand, a blog assignment appears much less daunting and informal than a term paper, and with that comes a much lower stress level, allowing the student to submit much better work.

ReplyDeleteI agree that some terms can have a negative connotation. Even though we do some informal blogging in 5th Grade, I do require formal formats in blogging and the students are still excited about writing! The only thing you need to add to make your double journal entry complete, is to cite the source for Education Needs a Digital Upgrade, by Virginia Hefferner. Use the Son of citation or bibme. Great choice for your supplemental link.

ReplyDeleteWhat you said about the late nights and caffine overloads is so very true. The word "essay" and "term paper" always seem to bring a lot of extra stress some how. This is probably due to the fact that no one likes getting a bad grade and often we feel too rushed and don't take time to check over our writing like we should. No one wants to reread a 8-10 page paper. You picked a very good portion to respond, I might be saying this because I also pciked a lesser part of that section. Your reaction was also very well written and keep up the good work.

ReplyDeleteI loge your reponse to this quote. I completely agree with hearing the word essay or paper freaks others out. I know when I hear an essay is due I make myself think that its going to a horrible experience. Whereas with a blog it doesn't seem as stressful.
I agree! Essays and term paper, those words are like hearing a witch laugh! I hate when teachers assign those. It takes way to much time and you always stress out over how perfect it has to be. I would rather do a blog posting any day!
